Vocational Programming Has Taken Off at Egg Harbor Township Schools!
According to the National Center for Education Statistics, 10 out of the 28 top fastest-growing careers could be pursued with vocational training available through public schools. We believe that public schools should be providing more extensive vocational programs for interested students. While all high schools are required to provide students with general education courses, only a handful of schools provide students with vocational alternatives. Egg Harbor Township High School is one of those schools!
Pre-Apprenticeship in Career Education (PACE) Grant
Funded through a generous $300,000 Pre-Apprenticeship in Career Education (PACE) grant from the NJ Department of Labor and Workforce Development Office in 2021, Egg Harbor Township launched a Pre-Apprenticeship in Career Education (PACE) grant-funded program during the 2021-2022 school year that will end in November 2022. The program has enabled approximately 40 high school seniors to pursue career-oriented coursework coupled with work-based learning opportunities; and provided students with access to high-quality, industry-focused training that combines classroom and on-the-job learning, and affordable pathways to college, higher wage-earning careers in in-demand industries, and employment connections with registered apprentice sponsor business partners. Offering programming in the Medical Assistant, Wastewater Operations, and Advanced Manufacturing occupation areas, Egg Harbor Township High School’s pre-apprenticeship program has also succeeded in providing our business partners with future solutions to their workforce needs. Through curriculum collaboration and planning, our partnerships have enabled businesses to contribute to the development of program curriculum, while creating their own employee pipeline of trained individuals that possess the precise specifications needed for their individual workplace needs. These new partnerships not only provide high-wage earning capabilities for student participants and an ongoing source of qualified workers for employers, but also helps to reduce business employee recruitment costs by ensuring they have the workforce they need today and in the future - a win-win for all involved.
Youth Transition To Work (YTTW) Grant
In June 2022, the district received a $425,000 Youth Transition To Work (YTTW) program grant to provide even greater opportunities and incentives for EHTHS juniors and seniors, as well as out-of-school youth between the ages of 16-24 to secure high-skill, high-wage employment in labor-demand, apprenticeable occupations. The funding will also enable the district to address the need for better-aligned secondary and post-secondary training that meet the interests of students and labor demands unique to New Jersey. The district looks forward to delivering a program that champions our students' goals, serves as an advocate for registered apprenticeships, and facilitates effective career pathway transitions for all participants. Programming will include our PACE grant program partners incluiding Atlantic Cape Community College (ACCC), Atlantic County Utilities Authority (ACUA), Atlantic County Workforce Development (ACWD), and NJ Manufacturing Extension Program (NJMEP) as well as new partnerships/collaboration with Ernest Trans School of Trucking, Viking Yacht Co., South Jersey Yacht Sales, Local 68 Operating Engineers, United Steelworkers, Atlantic City International Airport, and Kaizen Technologies Inc.
